Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TIFFIN, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with Heidelberg with the Raiders winning game one 13-10 and losing game two 11-6 Friday at Peaceful Valley.

The Purple Raiders now 14-10 overall and 5-5 in the conference while Heidelberg goes to 16-9 overall and 5-5 in the conference as well.

Heidelberg jumped on Mount Union starting pitcher Phil Mary (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) in the first inning as they got out to a 4-0 lead on a grand slam from Kyle Slovic. Mount Union answered in the top of the second as sophomore Ryan Boyd (Wooster) hit his first home run of the season that also scored Jimmy Scott (Holland/Toledo St. John's) to make the score 4-2.

The Raider offense piled on six runs to take the lead 8-4 in the top of the fourth. Boyd got the scoring started as he drove in Scott with a double. Two walks loaded the bases for Nate Owen (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley)as he hit a double to score Bryant Kennedy (Chagrin Falls) and Boyd to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Raiders. A sacrifice fly from Billy Goodall (Canfield/South Range) made the score 6-4 and Keleman ripped a triple that scored Owen and Christian Stanziano (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic).

The Student Princes knotted the game at 8-8 when they got a second grand slam, this one an insider-the-park homerun from Matt Psychas in the bottom half of the fourth.

Mount Union took the lead that they would not relinquish when they scored five runs in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded off a hit, walk and catcher's interference, Keleman added two runs batted in with a single that scored Niklas Kuriger (Atco, N.J./Winslow Township) and Stanziano to make the score 10-8. Jimmy Scott got his third hit of the game that scored Goodall, Boyd grounded out to score Keleman and Kennedy singled to score Scott and make the score 13-8.

Heidelberg got a solo homerun in the seventh and a run in the ninth but Beau Taylor (Alliance/West Branch), who got the win, shut the door on the Student Prince offense.

Mary got the no decision as he went four innings giving up eight runs, five earned, six strikeouts and seven hits. Taylor gets the win and goes to 4-2 on the year as he threw the last five innings giving up two hits and two runs.

In game two, the Student Princes again got on the board first as they scored a run in the second and third inning.

The Raider offense got their first runs in the fourth inning as they scored four times and took the lead 4-2. With the bases loaded, Goodall got his second catcher's interference of the day to bring home Jake Smith (Salem/West Branch) and then Keleman doubled to bring home three Raiders to round out the scoring in the fourth.

The Student Princes then scored crooked numbers in the next three innings as they retook the lead 5-4 and added insurance with two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to lead 11-4.

The Raiders would not go down without a fight as they scored two runs in the eighth when Jake Smith doubled to score Joe Nave and Owen hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 11-6.

After a 1-2-3 bottom half of the eighth, Mount Union got three more runs from Jimmy Scott's second home run of the year that also scored Keleman and Goodall. However, the Raiders could not keep the bats going as Joey Wenning got the next two Raiders out.

Noah Skladan (Amherst/Steele) took the loss (4-2) as he threw four innings giving up nine hits and five runs with five strikeouts.

Mount Union is next scheduled to do battle with John Carroll in University Heights on Wednesday, April 18 with the first pitch coming at 1 p.m.
