Softball: Raiders Split on Final Day in Florida; Riley Hits Walk-Off in Game Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MINNEOLA, Fla. – Mount Union's softball team split a pair of games against Lebanon Valley (Pa.) and Dominican (Ill.) on their last day of competition at The Spring Games.

Against Lebanon Valley (3-4), the Raiders held on tight through five innings of play as they only trailed 2-1. Mount Union's single run was brought in off a sacrifice bunt from Jordan Tull (Fairless/Brewster) which got Emily Hume (Minerva/Minerva) across the plate. Mount Union had trouble getting runners home as they left 10 on base.

The game was cut short in the sixth innings as Lebanon Valley was able to hit the ball in all the right places to get seven runs off five hits with three errors made by the Raiders and win 9-1.

In the circle, Hannah Reusser (Minerva/Minerva) falls to 3-4 with the loss, allowing nine runs off 10 hits.

In game two, Dominican (5-4) was able to get two runs on the board in just three at bats. Mount Union was able to score in the first with an RBI double by Morgan Riley (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) that drove in Jordan Kramer (Mentor/Mentor) who was on base with a triple to right field in her first at bat. In the bottom of the second, the Raiders struck again with a solo home run from Cheyenne Miller (Salem/West Branch) tying the game 2-2.

Dominican started to pull away with three runs in the third inning and then two more in the fourth, all while keeping Mount Union off the board to lead 7-2 entering the bottom of the fifth inning.

A sac-fly from Shelby Vansickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) in the bottom of the fifth to score Riley for Mount Union to now trail 7-3 with two innings left to play.

After a scoreless sixth inning for both sides, Mount Union erupted in the bottom in the seventh inning. With bases loaded and one out, Miller singled through to the left side to drive in Margaret Dominick (Dennison/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) and Allie Goldy (Painesville/Riverside) to make it 7-4.

Wild throws by Dominican sent Jenna Liles (Sterling/Norwayne), who came in to pinch run for Miller, and Vansickle around the bases, followed by an RBI single by Maddie Pidgeon (Salem/West Branch) drove the score up to 7-6, Raiders trailing with still only one out.

Next through the batting order was Hume and Brooklyn Hellman (Canton/Jackson), who both got on base by fielder's choice and a single to the left side. With bases reloaded, Anna Saxton (Boardman/Boardman) popped out to the second baseman for the second out, with the runners all holding at their bases.

Riley, coming back to the plate for the second time in the inning, swung hard at the first pitch and sent the ball straight through to right center field to score Pidgeon and win the game in a walk-off 8-7.

Tull had started the game before being relieved by Reusser in the top of the third inning. Reusser gets the win to balance her record to 4-4, allowing two runs off five hits.

Mount Union returns to Ohio with a 6-8 record and will next play at Hiram on Tuesday, March 20 in a 3:30/5:30 p.m. doubleheader.
