Softball: Raiders Split a Pair of Non-Conference Games With Case Western Reserve

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team split a pair of games with non-conference opponent Case Western Reserve Wednesday afternoon at Mather Park.

The Purple Raiders (15-17) took the 8-4 loss but then came back and defeated the Spartans 7-1 in game two.

In the first game, Jessica Calhoun (Brunswick/Brunswick) reached on an error by the Spartans first basemen to get the third inning going. A two-out single RBI down the left field line by Brittany Baitt (Painesville/Riverside) drove in Calhoun to get the Raiders on the board, 1-0.

A Morgan Riley (Charleoi, Pa./Charleoi) solo home run in the top of fourth put Mount Union up 2-0. CWR answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth putting the Spartans down by one, 2-1.

A two-out triple down the right field line by Baitt put Jordan Kramer (Mentor/Mentor) in a position to score. Kramer stepped up to the plate with a single RBI driving Baitt in to lead CWR 3-1 in the fifth.

CWR blew up the game in the bottom of the fifth getting their first lead of the game with seven runs.  Waldner started it off with a two-run home run putting the score at. The Spartans then got their five runs off of one out to lead the Raiders 8-3.

A Logan Lehman (Orrville/Orrville) two-out single RBI drove in Baitt to earn one more run. The Raiders could not get any more runs losing to the Spartans 8-4.

Hannah Wharton (Niles/Niles Mckinley) got her first start taking the loss allowing eight runs on nine hits.

In game two, the Raiders got the first two runs as they scored on an error and a wild pitch.

Mount Union scored three more runs as Lehman was hit by a pitch driving in Calhoun who singled earlier in the inning. Riley hit a two-out, two RBI single to get the Raiders up 5-0.

Two more runs in seventh sealed the deal for the Raiders as the Spartans only scored one run in the seventh with Mount Union getting the 7-1 win.

On the mound, Allie Scali (Parma/Parma) only allowed two hits with three strikeouts.

Mount Union next hosts Muskingum Wednesday, April 19 for a double header at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.n. in Alliance, Ohio at the 23rd Street Field.
