Softball: Raiders Power Past Capital

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team powered past Capital with a sweep against the Crusaders Saturday Afternoon at Clowson Field in Columbus, Ohio.

The Purple Raiders (14-16, 7-5 OAC) defeated the Crusaders in a close 2-1 win in the first game but with 12 hits in game two Mount Union got the 5-1 win.

The first game started off with four scoreless innings as the Raiders and Crusaders stayed at 0-0 going into the fifth. Jordan Kramer (Mentor/Mentor) singled to left field stealing both second and third as Emily Hume (Minerva/Minerva) hit a single RBI driving in Kramer to get a 1-0 lead over Capital.

Brooke Cox (Louisville/Louisville) had her third hit of the day, as she went 3-for-3, singling to first base. A Kramer two-out RBI single drove in Cox for the Raiders to lead the Crusaders 2-0 in the seventh.

With two Crusaders on base in the bottom of the seventh, Capital scored on a wild pitch to put the score at 2-1. Pitcher Allie Scali (Parma/Parma) struck out the last Crusader to get the win as she gets three strike outs. Scali moves to 5-9 on the season.

Brittany Baitt (Painesville/Riverside) started off the second game with a double down the left field line. A sacrifice bunt from Hume pushed Baitt to third as Morgan Riley (Charleoi, Pa./Charleoi) homered to left center getting a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Shelby Vansickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) singled to center field as Kramer flied out to center field pushing her to third. Baitt hit a single RBI driving in Vansickle to take a 3-0 lead over Capital.

Logan Lehman (Orrville/Orrville) hit a single run homerun in the third giving the Raiders a 4-0 lead over the Crusaders.

A run by Capital in the third put the score at 4-1, as the Raiders still led the Crusaders.

Mount Union scored another run as Kramer stole home in the seventh inning. Capital got two on base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but could not drive a run in as the Raiders took the 5-1 win.

On the mound, Hannah Reusser (Minerva/Minerva) pitched a full game allowing eight hits and only one run. Reusser improves to 9-7 on the season.

Mount Union next travels to Cleveland, Ohio to take on non-conference opponent Case Western Reserve Tuesday, April 18 at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m.
