Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union's volleyball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Baldwin Wallace Tuesday, October 4th at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.
The Purple Raiders (12-5) recorded their 12th straight win against the Yellow Jackets (19-2) in four sets 24-26, 26-24, 25-19 and 25-14.
Junior Riley Schenk (Lorain/Amherst Steele) recorded her 1,000 assist having 38 assists on the night. Junior Mallory Sliman (Amherst/Amherst Steele) led the Raiders with 11 kills while sophomores Sabrina Ochoa (North Royalton/Padua) and Kyleigh Jackson (Galloway/Westland) each added nine kills.
Sophomore Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton) led the defense with 30 digs while juniors Elise Nickoli (Monroeville/Norwalk St. Paul) and CeCe Barrett (University Heights/Hathaway Brown) each added 11 and 14 digs.
The first two sets of the match were tight for the Raiders and the Yellow Jackets.
In the first set there were 10 ties and nine lead changes. After Baldwin Wallace tied Mount Union 6-6, the Yellow Jackets took a four point lead. They kept their lead until a 4-0 service run from Barrett tied the game 15-15. The Raiders took a three point lead before Baldwin Wallace had three kills in a row to tie it 24-24. With two attack errors by Mount Union, Baldwin Wallace took the first 24-26.
The second set, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 4-1 lead. Baldwin Wallace then had three attack errors for Mount to tie it up, 4-4. Baldwin Wallace pushed for a five point lead over Mount Union, 10-15 and kept their lead up to six points at 20-14. With an 8-4 run by the Raiders, the score was tied at 24-24. An attack error by Baldwin Wallace and a kill by senior Caitilyn Synek (Indepedence/Independence), Mount Union took the second set 26-24.
The Raiders started off the third set early leading the Yellow Jackets by three points, 8-5. Mount Union pushed for a five point lead, 10-5 and kept at least a three point gap between them and Baldwin Wallace throughout the set, winning 25-19. The Raiders only had two hitting errors in the set while the Yellow Jackets recorded 13. Mount Union also had five blocks with Baldwin Wallace having zero.
Mount Union showed their intensity in the fourth set taking a strong 12-3 lead with service runs by Barrett and Nickoli. The Yellow Jackets could not get within six points of the Raiders throughout the entire set. Mount Union pushed to finish defeating Baldwin Wallace 25-14.
Mount Union travels to Tiffin, Ohio Saturday, October 8 at 1:00 pm to take on the Heidelberg Student Princes.
