Volleyball: Raiders Win Five Set Match Against John Carroll; Jackson Hits Career High With 18 Kills

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio  - Mount Union's volleyball team defeated  John Carroll Tuesday, October 25 in University Heights, Ohio.

Mount Union (17-7, 6-2 OAC) defeated John Carroll (15-11, 5-3 OAC) in five sets 15-25, 25-16, 25-16, 16-25, and 17-15. The Purple Raiders were led by Kyleigh Jackson (Galloway/Westland) with a career high of 18 kills, a hitting percentage of .607 and added two blocks while Caitlyn Synek (Independence/Independence) tabbed 10 kills on the night.

Riley Schenk (Lorain/Amherst Steele) led in assists with 29 and added seven kills while Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton) led the defense with 29 digs.

In the first set, the Raiders got off to a 7-3 start ahead of the Blue Streaks. John Carroll then went on a 5-0 service run to take the lead over Mount Union. The Raiders stopped the service run with an error by the Blue Streaks to tie the game back up at 8. John Carroll took back the lead with a 3-0 service run. Sliman stopped their run with a kill to put the score at 11-9, John Carroll. The Blue Streaks kept their lead, no less than three, the rest of the way taking the first set 25-14.

Mount Union started off the second set with a 7-2 lead including a 4-0 service run by Mary Beth Keck (Strongsville/St. Joseph Academy). The Raiders kept a two point gap between them and the Blue Streaks, and led by as much as nine, to take the second set 25-16.

The third set started off close with three ties and three lead changes until the Raiders pushed for a five point lead, 11-6. The Blue Streaks tied it back up and took a 13-12 lead but the Raiders didn't hesitate taking back their lead by one point, 14-13. Mount Union kept their lead the rest of the way winning the set 25-16.

Mount Union took a small 3-1 lead in the beginning of the fourth set, as the Blue Streaks tied it at 4. John Carroll took a commanding 11-5 lead over Mount Union. John Carroll kept a large lead between them and Mount Union the rest of the way taking the fourth set 25-16.

The Raiders trailed the Blue Streaks 6-3 in the beginning of the fifth set.  Mount Union fought back bringing the set within one point, 8-7, John Carroll. With the Raiders fighting through the set, they tied the Blue Streaks at 13. With a tie at 14, Mount Union pushed for a 15-14 lead and finished the set defeating John Carroll 17-15.

Mount Union hosts #10 Juniata Friday, October 28 at 7:00 PM at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance, Ohio.
