Softball: Raiders Split a Pair of Games with Ohio Northern

ALLIANCE, Ohio-- The University of Mount Union softball team split a pair of games -- a 17-5 loss and a 9-8 victory-- against Ohio Northern in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Saturday.

The Purple Raiders move to 10-8 overall, 3-1 in the conference, while the Polar Bears move to 11-6 overall, 2-2 in the conference.

In game one, Ohio Northern got on the board first capitalizing on an error by the Raiders.

Sophomore Olivia Schumacher (Gahanna/Gahanna Lincoln) opened the bottom of the first inning with a double to center field.

Freshman Brittany Baitt (Painesville/Riverside) earned an RBI with a single tying the game 1-1.

The Raiders took the lead in the third inning as Scumacher doubled then was drove home off a Baitt home run-- 3-2.

Ohio Northern held a 5-3 lead in the top of the seventh inning before Mount Union tied the game, 5-5, with two runs off a Baitt triple to center field.

Mount Union was unable to hold on after a 12-run extra inning for Ohio Northern ending the game 17-5.

In game two, Ohio Northern got off to an early lead scoring two runs in the first inning.

The Raiders got on the board in the bottom of the third inning as junior Andi VanSickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) hit a double earning an RBI.

Sophomore Logan Lehman (Orrville/Orrville) earned the Raiders two more runs in the inning also hitting a double to left field as the Raiders led 3-2.

Mount Union extended the lead in the bottom of the fourth as freshman Jessica Kennedy (Beach City/Fairless) hit her first home run of the season followed by A. VanSickle earning another RBI moving the Raiders to a 5-2 lead.

ONU threatened the lead scoring two runs in the top of the fifth.

Two doubles for A. VanSickle and Lehman earned three more runs for the Raiders extending the lead to 9-4.

Ohio Northern attempted a rally in the seventh inning scoring four runs but was not enough to overcome the Raiders that went on to win 9-8 in game two.

Earning the win on the mound for the Raiders was junior Erin Simmons (Suffield/Field).

Mount Union continues with OAC action as they travel to John Carroll Tuesday, Mar. 31 to take on the Blue Streaks at 3:00 and 5:00 pm.
