Wrestling: #5 Mount Union Places Seventh at NWCA National Duals

Day 2 Recap & Results

FT. WAYNE, Ind. -- No. 5 ranked Mount Union finished in seventh place at the NWCA National Duals in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

Mount Union (8-3) was upset by No. 10 ranked Augsburg (Minn.), 23-13 in the consolation semifinals but came back with a 28-11 win over No. 8 ranked Coe (Iowa) in the seventh place match.

In the seventh place match, the Purple Raiders won seven of the 10 matches including pins from Brian Olson (Covington/Covington) at 197 and Jon Garrison (Copley/Copley) at 157 with a major decision from Alec Cotton (Hartville/Lake) at 133.

Mount Union led 19-8 and put the match away when Brent Kirk (Adena/Buckeye Local) had a 5-3 triple overtime win at 184.

Against Augsburg (7-2), Mount Union lost three of the first four matches, then came back to win three of the next four before dropping both of the final two matches.

The Raiders wins came in a major decision win for Nick Hendershot (Willoughby/Willoughby South) at 165, an overtime decision for Bryant Roby (Westchester, Ill./St. Joseph) at 141 with decision wins at 157 for Garrison and Kirk at 184.

Mount Union hosts the Purple Raider Open next Sunday at Peterson Fieldhouse on campus.

Day 1 Recap & Results

FT. WAYNE, Ind. -- No. 5 ranked Mount Union beat No. 15 ranked Alma (Mich.), 24-12 then fell in an 18-17 match with No. 4 Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) before coming back with a 36-7 rout of No. 11 Cornell (Iowa) Friday at the NWCA National Duals in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

The Purple Raiders (7-2) recieved a first round bye and jumped out to a 17-0 lead over Alma (8-3) and went on to a 24-12 victory.

Mount Union got three major decision victories in the match from Jeremy Border (Caldwell/Caldwell) at 133, Jon Garrison (Copley/Copley) at 157 and Brent Kirk (Adena/Buckeye Local) at 184.

Against Concordia-Moorhead (8-2), the Raiders got a major decision win from Border then a win from Garrison but found themselves down 15-7 with three matches to go.

Mount Union then took a 17-15 lead with a major decision win from Kirk at 184 and a pin from Brian Olson (Covington/Covington) at 197. Jacob Alaire (Bay City, Mich./Bay City Western) then lost a 1-0 match at 285 and Concordia-Moorhead got an 18-17 victory.

In the consolation bracket against Cornell (8-7), the Raiders went out to a commanding 26-0 lead highlighted by pins from Border at 133 and Nick Hendershot (Willoughby/Willoughby South) at 165 and major decisions from Nick Mancini (Boardman/Boardman) at 125 and Ben Kazimir (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) at 149.

Mount Union got two more wins in the match -- a major decision from Kirk at 184 and a pin from Olson at 197.

The win against Cornell means the Raiders will place as a team. Mount Union has placed eighth in each of its two previous visits to the national duals.

The Raiders compete in the consolation semifinals against No. 10 ranked Augsburg (Minn.) Saturday at 9 a.m.
