Men's Basketball: Mount Union Defeated by No. 5 Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio - Mount Union's men's basketball team was defeated by nationally ranked No. 5 Marietta 86-82 on Wednesday night in the Ban Johnson Arena in Marietta.

The Purple Raiders (11-5, 7-2 OAC) were led by DeAllen Jackson (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) with 19 points and Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) with 18 points.

Taylor Moore (North Canton/Hoover) scored in double figures for the sixth consecutive game finishing with 16 points off the bench. Cody Dillon (Newton Falls/Newton Falls) added a dozen points in defeat.

Marietta (16-0, 9-0 OAC) was led by Garrett Stephenson and Keith Richardson both with 17 points.

The Pioneers scored the first three points of the game but the Raiders took the lead on a Jacubec layup five minutes into the game and lead for the final 15 minutes of the first half. Mount Union stretched its lead to as many as nine points, 30-21 with 6:56 in the half, with an 11-3 run. Seven of the points came from Moore and JJ Kukura (Alliance/Alliance) added the other four.

Marietta responded with an 8-2 run to cut the lead down to three points with under six minutes to play in the half. The teams traded baskets for the remainded of the half before Andy Dollman (11 points) scored on a layup as time expired. Mount Union led 42-41 at the half.

The Raiders scored eight of the first 10 points in the second half to take a seven-point advantage, 50-43 with 18:00 left in the game.  Marietta came back with a run of its own to cut the lead to 58-56 with just under 14 minutes to play. 

The game was tied on four separate occasions in the final 10 minutes of the game but Marietta did not take the lead until a Stephenson tip-in broke a 73-73 tie. Marietta opened up the lead with an 11-4 run to take a seven point lead with 0:29 left in regulation.

Mount Union's Jackson scored the next five points of the game to bring the game within two points but the Raiders ran out of time, falling by a final of 86-82.

The men's basketball team is next in action on Saturday, January 24 as they host Otterbein in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex at 3:00 pm in Alliance.
