Softball: Mount Union Gets a Conference Split With Heidelberg

ALLIANCE, Ohio- Mount Union's softball team split a pair of games with Heidelberg, falling 9-3 in game one then coming back with a 2-1 win in game two in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Sunday in Alliance, Ohio.

With the split, Mount Union is now 10-10-1 overall and 4-4 in the OAC, while Heidelberg is 13-9 overall and 2-6 in the conference.

In game one, Heidelberg jumped out to a 7-0 lead with a four-run first and a three-run second.

Logan Lehman (Orrville/Orrville) got the Purple Raiders on the scoreboard with a home run in the bottom of the second inning.

Heidelberg added to its lead with a run in the fifth.

Mount Union tried to rally in the fifth scoring two runs on a bases loaded walk to Shelby Carmichael (Dalton/Dalton) and a sacrifice fly from Megan Okuda (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) to close to within 8-3 and had two runners on base when the inning ended.

Heidelberg tacked on a run in the sixth for the 9-3 final.

Paige Atterholt scattered seven hits over seven innings to get the win for the Berg while Michelle Stiltner (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) fell to 7-4 with the loss for the Raiders.

The second game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning as the Raiders got back-to-back RBI singles from Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/ Westerville South) and Olivia Schumacher (Gahanna/Gahanna Lincoln) to take a 2-0 lead.

Heidelberg came back in the sixth and got a one-out RBI triple from Kayla Zachrich to cut the lead in half and chase Mount Union starting pitcher Erin Simmons (Suffield/Field).

Freshman Kailey DeMarco (North Ridgeville/North Ridgeville) came on in relief and allowed just one hit over the final 1.2 innings to pick up her first career save.

Simmons allowed only five hits and struck out seven over the first 5.1 innings to improve to 3-4 on the season.

Mount Union goes on the road Wednesday April 9 for a conference match up against Marietta.
