Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Mount Union's men's lacrosse team tallied a season-high 17 goals in a 17-7 at Thiel Wednesday in Greenville, Pa.
Michael Taylor (Broadview Hts/Brecksville-Broadview Hts.) and Josh Stephens (North Canton/Green) each had three goals as Mount Union moved to 2-3 on the season.
After Chris Daley (Wilmington, Del./Dupont) started the scoring with a goal just 2:02 into the contest.
Taylor and Stevens got on the board with goals at the 10:42 and 8:15 marks respectively to stake the Purple Raiders out to a 3-0 lead.
Thiel (1-2) then charged back with a pair of goals to make it 3-2 before Stephen Jones (Hudson/Hudson) and Stephens each scored to push the lead out to 5-2. Thiel finished the quarter with a man-up goal with 1:06 left and the quarter ended with the Raiders holding a 5-3 lead.
Mount Union then scored five unanswered goals in the first 10 minutes in the second quarter -- Hogan Harris (Medina/Medina), Carl Sopczyk (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls), Stephens, Jones and Taylor -- all scored during the run that gave the Raiders a commanding 10-3 lead.
Thiel scored twice before halftime to close the gap to 10-5 at the break.
Mount Union again got off to an early start scoring four more goals in the first eight minutes of the third quater. Taylor started the scoring with a man-up goal, Harris followed then Jack Wesner (Medina/Medina) and Josh Bender (Delaware/Delaware Hayes) then got into the scoring column as the Raiders led 14-5 after three quarters.
Thiel tallied a goal early in the fourth quarter before Daley and Sopczyk each scored again and left the score 16-6.
Each teams got a final goal with Thiel scoring just over five minutes to play and Derek Thomas (Erie, Pa./McDowell) finishing the scoring with a goal to go along for his team-high two assists for the 17-7 final.
Mount Union finished the game with a 38-32 advantage in shots.
Collin Peters (Portland, Ore./Sunset) had nine saves and gave up six goals in getting the victory in goal for the Raiders.
Mount Union next plays Kenyon Saturday, March 15 at 2 pm at Mount Union Stadium.
