Box Score 2 ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Mount Union volleyball team, ranked No. 11 in the nation, improved to 8-0 on the season as they won the Golden Flyer Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Purple Raiders defeated Scranton (Pa.) 3-0 and Nazareth 3-0 Saturday at Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y.
Mount Union faced tournament host Nazareth for the Golden Flyer Invitational championship Saturday afternoon. Senior Taylor Webb (Geneva/Geneva) was selected as the Tournament MVP as well as to the All-Tournament team. Teammate junior Nicole Snyder (Mentor/Lake Catholic) was also selected to the All-Tournament team.
The Raiders extended their win streak to eight games with the four wins this weekend over Hartwick 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-13), Fredonia State 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-11), Scranton 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-13) and Nazareth 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-15). This matches the best start to a season since 2009 when Mount Union opened the season with an 8-0 run.
In the 3-0 sweep of Scranton, Snyder led the Raiders with eight kills as junior Mel Patterson (Mentor/Lake Catholic) chipped in with seven kills for Mount Union. Junior duo Sarah Schleich (Westfield Center/Cloverleaf) and Brittany Woodard (Diamond/Southeast) both recorded double-digit assists in the win as Schleich recorded 16 as Woodard had 10. Woodard also finished with four aces for the Raiders as junior Lauren Mastroine (Orrville/Orrville) had 12 digs. Sophomore Kara Berger (Mentor/Mentor) added three solo blocks over Scranton.
Mount Union defeated Nazareth 3-0 as they completed their tournament sweep going a perfect 4-0 and 12-0 in all matches. Webb led the Raiders in kills against Nazareth with 10, as Berger and freshman Allison Twining (Perrysburg/Findlay) each chipped in with six kills. Berger also added three aces with three solo blocks and four assist blocks.
Schleich and Woodard both added double-digit assists against with 12 and 11, respectively. Mastroine recorded 13 digs to bring her dig tally on the day to 25 while pushing her tournament dig tally to 59 digs.
No. 11 Mount Union travels to Case Western Reserve on Wednesday, September 11 where the match is slated for 7 PM in Cleveland, Ohio.
