Box Score STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Mount Union's men's lacrosse team defeated Franciscan 27-2 Wednesday evening at Memorial Field in Steubenville.
The Purple Raiders (5-4) were led by freshman Carl Sopczyk (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) who tallied eight points on five goals and three assists. Freshman Hogan Harris (North Canton/Green) tallied seven points with six goals and one assist. Freshmen duo Michael Taylor (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) and Josh Bender (Delaware/Delaware Hayes) each tallied six points as Taylor scored four goals and had two assists and Bender scored five goals and had one assist.
The Barons (1-8) were led by Ryan Zbikowski who tallied two points with one goal and one assist as Sebastian Olsen scored the other goal for Franciscan.
Mount Union jumped out to an early 5-0 lead over the Barons as Sopczyk led the way with one goal and two assists in the first period. Franciscan's only two goals were in the second period as the Raiders outscored them 7-2 in the second taking the 12-2 lead into halftime.
The Raiders didn't shy away putting six more unanswered goals into the net in the third period before going into the final period of play up by 16 goals. Bender paced the fourth period as he scored all five of his goals in the fourth as the Raiders blanked the Barons 9-0 in the final period. Mount Union went on for the 27-2 victory over Franciscan.
Mount Union returns home next Wednesday, April 10th to host St. Vincent (Pa.) in Mount Union Stadium at 7:00 pm.
