Box Score 2 ALLIANCE, Ohio -- One night after locking up the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title, the 10th-ranked Mount Union volleyball team wrapped up its regular season with two wins, defeating both Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) and DePauw (Ind.) in straight sets.
For the Purple Raiders, it was their eighth and ninth consecutive victories. They have lost just on match since Sept. 21 and have won 21-of-23 overall (they were 3-3 after six matches).
In the opener, Mount Union topped Carnegie Mellon 23-15 in the first two sets before outscoring the Tartans 25-15 in the final set to take the match. Sophomore Mel Patterson's (Mentor/Lake Catholic) 13 kills paced the Raiders, while senior Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) picked up a game-high 28 digs. Sarah Schleich (Westfield Center/Cloverleaf) and Kristen Kayser (Oregon/Clay) each posted 16 assists. In addition, senior Dee Glass (Medina/Medina) finished the match with six blocks.
The win improved Mount Union's overall record to 23-5, while Carnegie Mellon fell to 13-16.
In the nightcap, the Raiders dealt DePauw its second loss to an OAC team of the day, defeating the Tigers 25-22, 25-22, 25-18. DePauw lost to Heidelberg, 3-0, in its opening match.
Freshman Mary Tout (North Royalton/North Royalton) and junior Taylor Webb (Geneva/Geneva) had eight kills each to lead Mount Union over DePauw. Gromes picked up another 28 digs, sophomore Nicole Snyder (Mentor/Lake Catholic) followed with 13 and Kayser led the Raiders with 19 assists.
Mount Union's win over DePauw marked the conclusion of the 2012 regular season. The Raiders finished 24-5 overall, 9-0 in the OAC and won the school's first OAC regular season championship. In addition, the team's 24 regular season wins was the most since 2007 and their nine OAC wins set the school record.
Mount Union will have the top seed in next week's OAC Tournament and home-court advantage throughout next week. The Raiders will open with eighth-seeded Muskingum on Tuesday night in Alliance. Match time is tentatively slated for 7 p.m.
