Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio -- A late Mount Union rally fell short as the Purple Raider baseball team fell, 9-8 to Hiram Tuesday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.
Mount Union trailed 7-4 and scored a pair of runs in the seventh on a Ty Wood (Hudson/Hudson) double and a Connor Mathis (Akron/Firestone) single then tied the game in the eighth inning on a sacrfice fly RBI from Britt Williams (Canton/Massillon Jackson).
In the top of the ninth, Doug Adkins drove in the go ahead run with a double and Ian Sewolich had what turned into be a decisive sacrifice fly RBI for the Terriers, who snapped a five-game skid and moved to 7-8 overall on the season.
Mount Union rallied again in the bottom of the ninth as Mathis drove in another run and the Raiders got the tying run to second base before Torrey Stimson, who started the game at third base, slammed the door as he pitched the final two innings to pick up the win in his first appearance of the season.
Mathis drove in two runs on three hits, Craig Knott (Canton/GlenOak) also had three hits and Ricky Olasz (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) had a pair of hits as the Raiders totaled 11 hits for the game but left 11 runners on base.
Trent Vallinger (Poland/Poland Seminary), one of four pitchers to work, took the loss in relief for Mount Union that falls to 4-9 on the season.
Mount Union retuns to action tomorrow hosting Walsh at 3:30 pm at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.
