Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Mount Union's softball team closed out its Spring Break trip with a pair of victories in Rebel Spring Games action at the Osceola County Complex on Saturday. The Purple Raiders defeated Kean (N.J.), 1-0, and Westminster (Pa.), 10-1.
Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) spun a three-hit shutout in the win over Kean. She recorded 13 strikeouts and no walks. At one point, McAninch retired 15 consecutive batters.
Sarah Woody (Uniontown/Green) smacked an RBI double to provide the game's only run.
Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) led off the fourth inning and reached base on an error. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mara Palombaro (Boardman/Cardinal Mooney) and then scored on Woody's two-base hit to left-center field.
The Raiders rapped 12 hits and benefitted from seven Westminster errors in the nightcap.
Palombaro led the attack, batting 4 for 4 with a double three RBIs. Jasmine Bentley (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) added three hits, including a double, and two runs scored.
Rachel Jesso (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant) and Jill Rader (Ashland/Ashland) also scored two runs for Mount Union (7-3). Gromes tripled.
The Raiders got on the board in the third. Bentley looped a double into shallow left field and scored on a Palombaro single.
Mount Union then added three runs in the fourth, taking a 4-0 lead, with help from two Titan errors. Palombaro had an RBI single during the frame.
Westminster struck back for one run in its half of the fourth on a single by Katie Hughes.
The Raiders built upon their lead with four runs in the sixth inning and two in the seventh.
Bre Willis (Navarre/Fairless), who earned the win in the pitcher's circle, led off the sixth with a single. She was briefly lifted for pinch runner Amanda Pool (Bergholz/Edison) who scored on a single by Jesso. Palombaro added an RBI double later in the inning.
In the sixth and seventh innings combined, Mount Union pushed across four runs on two different plays featuring costly Westminster errors.
Willis went the distance, finishing with four strikeouts and two walks. She allowed one run on three hits.
The Raiders will return to action next Saturday for a doubleheader at Trine (Ind.). First pitch is at 2 p.m.
