(ALLIANCE, OH)--Mount Union's softball team clinched a spot in next week's four-team Ohio Athletic Conference Softball Tournament with a 3-0 game two win over Marietta Tuesday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance. Marietta kept its tournament hopes alive with a 6-0 win in game one.
Mount Union now stands at 24-12 overall and at 12-4 in the OAC is alone in second place, while Marietta is 19-14 overall and 7-9 in the OAC.
In game one, Marietta pitcher Chelsea Chaffin held Mount Union to a season-low two hits in getting a complete game 6-0 victory and halting the Raiders win streak at 11 games.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Marietta plated five runs on five-straight hits to take a commanding 5-0 lead. The Pioneers tacked on another run in the seventh for the 6-0 final.
In game two, Anna Horning (Cuyahoga Falls/Woodridge) drove in two runs and Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) pitched a complete-game five-hit shutout in a 3-0 Mount Union win.
Horning's first RBI came on the first at-bat of the game as she hit her third home of the season and gave the Purple Raiders an early 1-0 lead.
Mount Union would load the bases later in the first and went up 2-0 on a ground-out from Jill Rader (Ashland/Ashland).
The Raiders loaded the bases again in the fourth and Horning hit a ball that was misplayed by the shortstop and brought a run home to make it 3-0.
Marietta did not get a runner past second base until the fifth inning and McAninch responded by retiring the next eight Pioneers in order as she finished with seven strikeouts and improved to 14-1 on the season.
Mount Union closes out the regular season hosting No. 3 in the nation Ohio Northern Saturday at 1 pm at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.
