(ALLIANCE, OH)--Mount Union College's softball team suffered 5-3 and 4-3 losses to Capital University in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.

Mount Union falls to 15-13 overall and 3-5 in the OAC, while Capital moves to 14-10 overall and 4-4 in the OAC.

The Purple Raiders took a 2-0 lead in the opener on RBI singles in the third inning from Meghan Simons (Minerva/Minerva) and in the fourth inning from Alex Lucak (Maple Heights/Trinity).

Capital took advantage of an error in the top of the fifth to score a pair of unearned runs and tie the game at 2-2.  The Crusaders would score two more runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh to take a 5-2 lead.

Mount Union scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on a Mara Palombaro (Boardman/Cardinal Mooney) double and brought the winning run to the plate before the rally ended.

Brittany Stefano struck out seven to get the win for Capital, while Kellie Schmucker (Louisville/Marlington) took the loss for Mount Union

Simons and Jill Rader (Ashland/Ashland) each had three hits but the Raiders stranded 11 runners on base.

In the nightcap, Capital did its damage in the first inning as the first four batters reached and the Crusaders plated three runs.  Another run in the fifth inning extended the margin to 4-0.

Mount Union rallied in the sixth as a Capital error with two outs scored a run then Simons came up and hit her third home run of the season, a two-run shot, to bring the score to 4-3, but again the rally ended with the go ahead run at the plate.

After the first inning, Mount Union starter Bre Willis (Navarre/Fairless) allowed just four hits and went the distance but took the loss.

Stefano allowed just six hits to pick up her second win of the day.

Simons and Rader each had two hits in the game and each finished the day with five to lead the Raiders at the plate.

Mount Union continues the homestand Friday at 1 pm with an OAC doubleheader against Wilmington College.
